International Women’s Day is celebrated each year on March 8, in some countries it is a public holiday. It is a day on which to celebrate the movement of women’s right in economy, politic and social achievement.

In Italy, La Festa della Donna (translation of women’s day in Italian), although is not a public holiday, Italian men celebrate it by giving yellow Mimosa flower to their mother, wife or girlfriend. On March 8, you will find Mimosa sellers spread all over the city. It became more similar to Mother’s Day or Valentine’s Day here in Italy.

Mimosa Flower

Mimosa flower was chosen as the symbol of women’s day in Italy not only because it blooms in March but also it is relatively inexpensive. It became the mark of the first holiday after the end of World War II. The yellow, fluffy and delicate Mimosa buds became the symbol of this special day.

The celebration of Women’s Day in Italy has gone very popular.

Not to forget that Italy is the heaven of culinary, a cake which is inspired by Mimosa flower, will be prepared for this occasion.

The Torta Mimosa, is basically a sponge cake made with Grand Marnier filled and covered with pastry cream and topped with sponge cake cubes to mimic the appearance of Mimosa buds.

Many restaurants and clubs offer special events for Women’s Day, from an exclusive menu with Mimosa theme in the restaurant to afterparty show in the club with some men dancers on the stage. Not to forget also many museums are free for women.

On this special event, Milano Difesa Personale, a Martial Art Association, offers 3 days free lesson of Self Defense for women. The lessons will take place on March 8, 15 and 22 in Via Marsala 8, Milano at 19.00 to 20.30.

On this special event for women, you will learn about how to act and to protect yourself in any circumstances like when you travel solo, walk at night alone or when you’re in a dangerous situation.

You will learn how to act and what to do to avoid any harms without any contacts.

Since women nowadays become more independent and brave, I think it is also important to know how to protect ourselves in any situations.
